pen-trosity: So one last step on one last Adventure with the old gang after all these years. How do you, as a fellow Digimon see things as Tri is about to take a bow and curtain call?

firstagent:

We’re on the verge of finishing off a phenomenally successful continuation that’s kept us on our heels for three years, fans are as engaged as they ever have been, and the future still has some gleam in it. Honestly, this could be as good as it ever gets!

If the finale disappoints, if the merch dries up, if we start to get the feeling the next series (original or Adventure) isn’t around the corner, these last couple years will be the good times. Because of that, can we do one thing real quick?

Can we give a big thanks to Digimon Adventure tri. for happening?

Regardless of how you feel about the series, it has galvanized a franchise, drawn so many of us out into the sunlight, and set us up for additional treats along the way and more down the road. It is, without question, the best thing to happen to Digimon since Zero Two ended. We should take a moment to acknowledge that.

  • Thank you for bringing our kids back for another trip and letting us laugh and cry with them all over again.
  • Thank you for challenging us- avoiding easy nostalgia and instead going so far as to manipulate our yearning for it, attacking the concept with a unique presentation, a story that complicates our beloved norms, and new characters that make us realize that being a Chosen Child isn’t always desirable or fun or even a net positive.
  • Thank you for not simplifying the original characters, but rather portraying them with more depth and insight than anyone could have expected. The expertise to which tri. handles Adventure’s characters and mythology leave even the most ardent fans rushing to keep up, and it’s been an amazing ride.
  • Thank you for anchoring everything else we’ve gotten along the way. Even if Cyber Sleuth’s western release, Next Order, or Appmon would have happened without tri., tri. has at least helped bring people into the fold to potentially take interest in these new ventures, both with wonderful stories in their own right. tri.’s success has undoubtedly led to an influx of new merchandise extending beyond Adventure. Every season has seen at least a little love. And tri. also led to a Digimon Adventure stage play, prioritizing new perspectives and alternate relationships the movie series wasn’t able to explore.

Thank you tri. for existing, and may the next chapter of Digimon continue the success you have brought us.
